On the 25th of April, Francois Janse van Rensburg will do something most of us only dream about while binge-watching Netflix in comfy socks. He will walk 1500 kilometres from Windhoek to Somerset West. Forty days of blisters, early mornings, roadside snacks. Not to mention the occasional questionable bathroom stop all for the families supported by the Somerset West Night Shelter.
Not His First Long Walk
Francois is no stranger to endurance challenges. Last year he walked 832 kilometres from Strand to Gqeberha to raise funds for the shelter. This year’s 1500 kilometres is almost double and yet the mission remains the same. He wants to help families in need, shine a light on the shelter’s work, and prove that stubborn determination and slightly crazy ideas can do incredible things. He is not walking for medals, selfies, or personal glory, though we would not blame him for a dramatic finish-line pose or two.
More Than a Place to Stay
The Somerset West Night Shelter has been a cornerstone of the Helderberg community since 1988, supporting single adults. In 2020, the Family Shelter opened its doors, becoming the only facility of its kind in the Western Cape, offering a safe space for homeless families with children. What happens there goes far beyond offering a place to stay. Families receive meals, counselling, rehabilitation, baby and toddler daycare, school transport for fifty children to school every day.
Restoring Dignity Every Day
There are also opportunities for skills development, employment opportunities, health and wellness support, and social programmes. All designed to help families regain independence with their dignity still intact. Members of the public can also support this work by purchasing vouchers, which are exchanged for essentials such as food, hygiene products, and clothing by individuals and families in need. Every service empowers, not just provides, and every effort makes a real difference.
Despite being full, the shelter recently said yes to thirty more families. Expansion is underway with the goal of serving sixty families by this time next year. Every donation, every form of support, every kilometre Francois puts behind him, brings them closer to that goal.
Why This Journey Matters
Big Beard Web Solutions is proud to support Francois and the shelter. His walk reflects the shelter’s mission. Step by step, kilometre by kilometre, small actions can create a ripple effect that changes lives. Watching someone willingly endure sore feet, unpredictable weather, and the occasional roadside snack shortage for the sake of others, is a reminder that real heroes do not always wear capes or running shoes.
Grit, Heart, and a Long Road
Walking 1500 kilometres is no small feat. It requires grit, stamina, and a little stubbornness. Francois brings all of that to the road with a generous heart and unwavering commitment. The families, staff, and community he supports are the true beneficiaries, but we get to witness a bit of magic along the way and maybe a few hilarious roadside moments too.
Walk With Purpose
If you would like to help the Somerset West Night Shelter continue their vital work, you can make a donation. Every contribution helps provide meals, care, and a safe place to call home. Step up with Francois from day one and join him in supporting families who need us most.
